An Image That Speaks
A made thing given breath, which speaks and condemns those who will not worship it: what each reading makes of it, and where artificial intelligence fits, or does not.

- The mark
- The false prophet has the inhabitants of the earth make an image for the first beast, and is permitted to breathe life into it, so that it speaks and has those who will not worship it put to death (Revelation 13:14–15; Daniel 3; Psalm 115:5; Habakkuk 2:19).

- Mark 10 on The First Beast
What the mark requires
Read in context (Standard 4), the mark has four parts: an image made for the first beast at the false prophet's urging, breath given to it, a voice, and worship enforced on pain of death. The Church teaches that substituting a made thing for God is idolatry (CCC 2113; Antiqua et Nova 105), but she does not teach that artificial intelligence is the image of Revelation 13, and she calls for it to be governed, not condemned (Magnifica Humanitas). A reading that claims the mark must show an image made for the one it names and honored as the text describes, not only that speaking machines exist.
The three readings
| Reading | Claims mark 10? | Evidence it gives | What weighs against | Standards |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| St. Irenaeus | Yes | The false prophet "shall order an image of the beast to be made, and he shall give breath to the image, so that the image shall speak, and he shall cause those to be slain who will not adore it" (Against Heresies V.28.2) | No application to test | 1, 2, 16 met |
| Peter Thiel | No; he inverts it | For Thiel artificial intelligence is not the danger: the Antichrist is the one who would halt it, "a luddite who wants to stop all science," and he calls AI regulation the Antichrist's program | He does not engage the image of 13:14–15; his reading sets him against the Church's call for AI to be governed for the common good (Magnifica Humanitas; Antiqua et Nova) | 3 not met on this point: the analogy of faith |
| Fr. John | Yes, held open | AI as the image, the means of its voice, or the means of the mark. Machine-made images of the first beast spread to the world: the golden statue in the Gaza video he posted (2025), the image as pope (2025), the image as Christ the healer (2026). The second beast's hand in the machines: Jared Kushner co-founded Brain Co., which builds AI applications on OpenAI's models for "government institutions" and others, funded through his own fund (2025) (his case) | None of the images was made at Kushner's urging or honored by command; the Gaza video was satire by others and the Christ image was taken down; Brain Co. is one of many AI firms; no image has been given breath and enforced on pain of death | 7 met; 4 not met as yet: an image honored by command is not shown; 19 met: the open question is labeled as open; 30: graded possible, not yet seen |
Verdict on the arguments
Fr. John holds this mark open, which is the honest place for it, and he joins two documented threads: machine-made images of the man he reads as the first beast, set before the world, and the man he reads as the second beast building AI for governments. As a watch on where the mark could be fulfilled, that is reasonable, and it agrees with the Church's warnings about idolatry and technology. As an argument that the mark is now fulfilled, it falls short: no image has been made at the false prophet's urging, given a voice, and honored by command. St. Irenaeus reads the mark faithfully of the end. Thiel's reading turns the warning around, treating restraint of technology, not its idolization, as the Antichrist's work.
These are verdicts on arguments, not on any person.
