Apocalypse 13Revelation 13: the readings weighed

The readings

The Proposals

Each reading is first stated as its holder would state it, before anything is weighed (Standard 29).

Three readings are weighed in this first stage. More will be added, each stated at its best before it is tested (Standard 29). Weighing an interpreter's proposal is not a verdict on the interpreter.

St. Irenaeus: the classic reading A Father or Doctor

St. Irenaeus of Lyon, writing around A.D. 180, gives the earliest full reading of the beast by a Father of the Church (Against Heresies V.25–30). He reads the beast from the sea as one man to come at the end, who receives all the power of the devil, sets himself up to be worshiped as God, and rises among ten kings into whom the Roman Empire is divided. He reads the beast from the earth as his armor-bearer, the false prophet. He will not guess the beast's name: the number, he says, was left hidden so that it would be recognized only when it is fulfilled (V.30.3).

He is weighed here as the classic reading because he applies the text to no one in the present, so his reading shows what a faithful reading of the marks looks like before any application is made. St. Hippolytus and St. Cyril of Jerusalem are drawn in where they add to him.

Peter Thiel: the world state A theologian

Peter Thiel, the technology investor and co-founder of PayPal and Palantir, is not a Catholic, but he has lectured widely on the Antichrist since 2024, including in Rome. His thesis, as he set it out on the record (Hoover Institution, Uncommon Knowledge, 2024): the Antichrist is a type that can be a person, a system or an ideology. In our age it will come to power by stirring fear of catastrophe (nuclear war, pandemics, artificial intelligence, climate) and offering "peace and safety" (1 Thessalonians 5:3) through a world government that halts science and technology. He sees runaway technology as the danger of Armageddon and a stifling world state as the danger of the Antichrist, and judges the second more likely.

Only what he has said or published on the record is weighed here. His private lectures are cited only as reported in the press, and his two essays in First Things are still to be read in full.

Fr. John: the American presidency Fr. John's proposal

Fr. John, a Catholic diocesan priest who founded and directs The Ephesus Challenge, reads the seven heads of the beast as seven world powers, counted from John's day, with the United States as the seventh. He proposes that the first beast of Revelation 13 is Donald J. Trump: the seventh head his first term, the eighth his return to power in the 47th presidency. He grades each mark possible or probable, never settled, and sets out the evidence against his reading beside the evidence for it. The Church has not taught this reading, and he does not say she has.

He makes his case on his own site. Here it is weighed by the same standards as every other reading, and he asks that it be tested.
