The mark
The dragon hands the beast his power, throne and great authority, and the world worships the dragon and the beast together (Revelation 13:2, 4).

Mark 1 on The First Beast: the text, the Fathers, the Church, and where interpreters differ

What the mark requires

Read in its context (Standard 4), mark 1 is not great power as such. St. Paul teaches that the authorities that exist are established by God (Romans 13:1). The mark is authority received from the dragon and issuing in the dragon's worship (Revelation 13:4). A reading that claims it must show that link, not only a powerful figure.

The three readings

Reading Claims mark 1? Evidence it gives What weighs against Standards
St. Irenaeus (the classic reading) Yes, centrally The one to come receives all the devil's power and, an apostate, seeks worship as God (Against Heresies V.25.1); read with Daniel 7 and 2 Thessalonians 2 Reads the beast as one man, where Augustine reads the ungodly city (City of God XX.9) 1, 2, 16 met; 9 met: he refuses to name anyone (V.30.3)
Peter Thiel Not directly Power rises from fear of catastrophe and the promise of "peace and safety" (1 Thessalonians 5:3), offered by a world state (Hoover Institution, 2024) The dragon's gift and the worship that follows do not appear in the on-record material reviewed so far; 1 Thessalonians 5:3 concerns the sudden Day of the Lord, not the beast's rise 4 to assess; 1 partly met. His two First Things essays are still to be read.
Fr. John Yes Satan cannot become incarnate, so he gives his power to a man; deception, the devil's chief work (John 8:44), is shown in a documented pattern of false and suggestive public speech (his case) Holding power is not itself the mark; deception shows a likeness to the "many antichrists" (1 John 2:18), not by itself the dragon's gift of his throne, which the text ties to worship 2, 3 met on the premise; 7 met for the evidence given; 4 partly met; 30: graded probable

Verdict on the arguments

St. Irenaeus's reading is strong as exegesis, and it makes no application to the present that could be tested. Fr. John's premise, that Satan works through a man rather than becoming one, matches the Fathers and St. Thomas Aquinas. His evidence is documented and checkable, but it shows deception, which the text does not make the mark itself; the link from the dragon's gift to worship is still to be shown, and that is the test of mark 6. Thiel's reading, as far as the material reviewed shows, does not claim this mark.

These are verdicts on arguments, not on any person. This site never says that anyone is or is not the Antichrist.
