- The mark
- The beast is given authority to act for forty-two months, the same span as the 1,260 days and "a time, two times, and half a time" (Revelation 13:5; 11:2–3; 12:6, 14; Daniel 7:25; 12:7).

What the mark requires
The number says that the beast's time is given, measured, broken (half of seven) and short. Read with the Church, it is first symbolic (Standard 2), and it can never be made into a date (Standard 5; Standard 25; CCC 673). A reading that uses this mark must show how its proposal keeps the time given and limited, and it must not compute an end. A reading that sets a date fails this mark whatever else it gets right.
The three readings
| Reading | Claims mark 12? | Evidence it gives | What weighs against | Standards |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| St. Irenaeus | Yes | The half-week of Daniel is the reign of the one to come: "he will reign for three years and six months," and then the Lord comes (Against Heresies V.25.4; V.30.4) | He reads the span literally but builds no calendar on it | 1, 2, 5, 16 met |
| Peter Thiel | Not in the material reviewed | His world state is feared as hard to dismantle once built; the material reviewed does not take up a measured time | Not applicable | — |
| Fr. John | Yes | He holds the symbolic reading as the Church's, and tests a literal reading only backward, on his page The Timing, naming years only for steps already past. On this card he adds that the time is held within an office the law limits to two terms, and sets his words on a third term beside Daniel 7:25 ("to change… the law"): "not joking… there are methods" (March 2025); "pretty clear" he is "not allowed" (October 2025); "the law is very strong" (August 2026) (his case) | A limited time is common to every ruler and cannot single out one man. The literal test rests on a seven-year frame the Church does not teach and a pause the text does not mention, and Revelation 13:5 places the forty-two months after the healing. The third-term remarks were called jokes, and he has since said the law forbids it | 5 and 25 met: no date is set or computed; 2 met: the Church's reading kept first; 7 met; 4 partly met; 9 to watch: any count with a start invites readers to compute an end; 30: graded possible, unfolding |
Verdict on the arguments
Fr. John keeps this mark as the Church asks: the symbolic reading first, no date set, and any literal test run backward against history, never forward. That is the most important thing a reading of this mark can do. His new point, that in his reading the beast's time sits inside an office the law limits, is a fair use of the text's given time, and his evidence on a third term is stated with his own later words against it. But a limited term is the condition of every president, so the mark as he uses it cannot single out one man; and the literal test on his timing page carries the weaknesses he names himself. St. Irenaeus reads the span literally of the one to come without building a calendar. Thiel's reading does not take up this mark.
