The mark
The beast is granted authority over every tribe, people, tongue and nation, and all the inhabitants of the earth worship it, except those written in the Lamb's book of life; ten kings give it their power and authority (Revelation 13:7–8; 17:12–18; Daniel 7:23; Luke 4:5–8).

What the mark requires

Read in context (Standard 4), the beast's reach is authority, given by the dragon and joined to worship (Revelation 13:4, 8), and in Revelation 17 the kings hand their power to it (17:13). Great powers have reached across the world in every age, and the Church herself calls for a world authority bound by law and the moral order (Caritas in Veritate 67), so wide reach is not yet the mark. A reading that claims it must show nations giving up their power to the one it names, or a single authority over them centered on him.

The three readings

Reading Claims mark 8? Evidence it gives What weighs against Standards
St. Irenaeus Yes, centrally The empire of his day will be divided among ten kings; the one to come will slay three and "subject the remainder to his power," and they "shall give their kingdom to the beast" (Against Heresies V.26.1) No application to test 1, 2, 16, 17 met
Peter Thiel Yes, centrally A world government that halts science and technology in the name of "peace and safety," embraced by a frightened world He names no present world state and reads the danger as a tendency; the Church does not condemn international authority as such (Pacem in Terris 137) 15 partly met; 3 to watch
Fr. John Yes The reach of the U.S. presidency over every nation (his card 2: tariffs on nearly every nation, aid withdrawn, withdrawal from 66 international bodies, the Iran war); and in his own name: the seizure of Venezuela's president and the announcement that the United States will "run the country" (January 2026); tariffs threatened on eight allies until Greenland is sold (January 2026); a "Board of Peace" he chairs, with a veto over its decisions and, by an official's account, a chair he may keep "until he resigns it," with billion-dollar permanent seats and some 27 founding members (2026) (his case) Influence is not authority, and most of the world does not follow him: majorities in 19 of 24 countries lacked confidence in him (Pew, 2025). Major allies, Brazil, Mexico and the Holy See declined the Board of Peace; the Greenland tariffs were dropped within four days; China and Russia are rivals he does not command. American reach was arguably wider in earlier decades, so reach alone does not single out one president 7 met; 4 partly met: reach shown, authority over the nations not shown; 8 met: consistent with his card 2; 9 to watch; 23 met: the test for probable is set in advance; 30: graded possible, partly seen

Verdict on the arguments

Fr. John shows a presidency using its reach over other nations unusually directly, and in his own name: running another country, pressing allies for their land, and chairing a new body of nations. His evidence is documented and his defense is stated. But what it shows is the influence of a great power, contested by most of the world and checked by rivals and allies, not yet the authority over every nation, freely handed over by kings, that the text describes. The Board of Peace is the item that bears most directly on Revelation 17:13 and is worth watching. St. Irenaeus reads the mark faithfully of the one to come. Thiel's world state takes this mark as its center, but his reading identifies a tendency rather than a present power.

These are verdicts on arguments, not on any person.
